Niang A Sha, is Chinese pronunciation for Nianx Eb Seil in Miao language, a very common fairy lady in Miao’s legend about beauty and love.
Most Miao people in Qingshui River valley villages can sing , at least know the legend of Nianx Eb Seil.
The legend tells that Niangx Eb Seil has soft gentle figure like mulberry branch. Her face is milky and plump, her skirt hangs down like fish net, textile like colorful horse ornaments, she is the one every guy wants to meet in his life. When she crossed Wanshui river ( a river and also name of town in north Kaili 湾水) to participate a festival in Panghai( 旁海， A town by the river on the way from Kaili to Jiaba Niuchang), she raised her skirt , legs are so milky and plump, every guy wants to marry her. The prince of sun becomes the winner to take her home. After the marriage, the sun prince is busy with business , traveling far and long time. The moon prince comes to her life, they fall in love and they run away. The sun prince returns, he swears to shoot Niangx Eb Seil , his wife for revenge, but the moon prince begs for his mercy not to kill. In return, the moon prince gives him all his property to change his wife, the sun prince is happy , he gets wealth and give up his wife to the moon prince. NIanx Eb Seil is saved, she goes with the moon prince, there the true love starts.
There are many legend editions about Nianx Eb Seil in the Qingshui River valley Miao villages but the one written down in a book in my shelf is the complete one as I know, the book is entitled Hxak Hliob, the Great Legend. The legend about Nianx Eb Seil consisted nine hundred and ninety five lines, takes three hours to recite it without tea stop.
Nianx Eb Seil is a symbol of beauty in today’s Miao society , but just in Qingshui River Valley , including JIanhe, Taijiang, Leishan, Kaili, Huangping, covering a population of a million of Miao . Some businessman has grasped its name to register as product brand, such as mineral water. Jianhe county built a huge statue of this fairy lady in the lower reach of new town in Jianhe. This statue was estimated 13 million US dollars, 66 meters high, with 22 meters for the stage. The huge project started in November of 2016. In May of the next year, the figure was finished but stage is only half done when it was ordered to stop by higher politicians, the criticizes tell that Jianhe is No.2 extremely poor county remains for poverty release, this statue is over 30 meters, which is a red line that can’t be cross. But local government explains that during the tour on season, more than ten thousand flooded in per day and expenditure pours in the county too, this help locals make money.
